National Anthem Same Age as Newcomerstown

Newcomerstown News: August 16, 1964 - While the citizens of Newcomerstown are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the town, the entire nation is commemorating the 150th anniversary of another event, the writing of the national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner.

It was in 1814 that Nicholas Neighbor came from Morris county, New Jersey to found Newcomerstown. It was also in 1814 that Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star Spangled Banner" while a prisoner of the English during the War of 1812.

So, while Newcomerstown residents celebrate the town's 150th anniversary, they are commemorating the 150th birthday of the National Anthem.
