The
construction and operation of the Newcomerstown Produce Company
refrigeration locker system marks a definite era of progress in
the safe keeping of a large quantity of food.
Completed a little more than one year ago, the modern lines of
architecture and the latest mechanical features of the building,
which is located at the rear of the company’s lot on West Church
Street, has attracted the attention of trade magazines
throughout the United States and in several foreign countries.
Ralph Brumbach, who has been manager of the company for the past
20 years, estimated that at least 1,000,000 copies of pictures
of the locker building have been made by advertisers. The
structure was the first of its kind built east of the
Mississippi river and is still acclaimed the best for its size
in the country by locker men.
The
Newcomerstown Produce Company was established in 1898. For 17
years the late J.S. Barnett served as manager. Mr. Brumbach
succeeded Mr. Barnett and points out that the company has had
only two owners since its origination. In addition to the modern
plant in Newcomerstown, the company owns similar plants in
Caldwell and Malta, both having the latest refrigeration
equipment.
