125th Anniversary Celebration

First Night of Program

Four big
attractions this evening will officially open Newcomerstown's
125th anniversary celebration.
The big Industrial and Business parade will start from East
Canal Street at 6:30 p.m. and promises to be one of the longest
ever staged here, Marshal R. Lellan Shoemaker said today.
The entrance of the Ohio National Guard, Battery F, 136th field
artillery, into the parade was hailed by the celebration
committee as an outstanding attraction. In addition, a number of
business and industrial floats, two bands, members of
organizations, bicycles, pets, children and many others will
stretch the parade column beyond advance predictions.
Miniature artillery warfare will be conducted on West Canal
Street by the Ohio National Guard at 7:30 p.m. Guardsmen will
swing into action with their artillery, shooting dummy shells as
in actual battle. Captain Arthur Limbach, who in his unofficial
moments is chairman of the state Democratic committee, will be
in charge of the "attack."
The crowning of the pageant queen, who was also elected "Miss
Newcomerstown" in balloting earlier this week, will be held at
the Athletic field at 8:30 p.m., prior to the opening
performance of the historical pageant. The "queen," Miss Thelma
Swigert, Cross Street, will be crowned by Acting Mayor Earl
Treasure during an impressive ceremony.
At 10:00 p.m. Prince Nelson, tightrope walker extraordinary, is
scheduled to balance his way across the business section on a
strand of rope, suspended between high towers. The act will be
free and is a hair-raiser, the celebration committee reports.
Nelson will present his act each night for the remainder of the
week and on Saturday afternoon, it was reported.

Guard.
The unit,
carrying four artillery pieces, will present its demonstration
in front of the Ford garage on West Canal Street following the
