Thirty-Six Diplomas Given Friday

The Coshocton Tribune: June 03, 1923 - The Newcomerstown opera house was the scene Friday evening of exercises for one of the largest graduating classes in the history of the Newcomerstown high school. The opera house also held one of the largest crowds in its history, was the report.

The program was among the best presented by any Newcomerstown graduating class. A variety of orations, readings, vocal music, instrumental music, quartet duet and the main class address of the evening made up the program.

Music was furnished by the high school orchestra, which played splendidly. The program consisted of the following – Vocal solo by Almena Yingling, Readings by Mary Hayes, Mildred Schlupe, Dorothy Swigert and Jen Eva Raine, valedictory, Floride Kistler, high school quartet, Herbert Prosser, John Ray, Ferguson MacMillan and Russell McQueen, violin solo by Henrietta Vogenitz, oration by Wilbur McPherson and a vocal duet by Miss Vogenitz and Helen Gefeller.

The chief address of the evening was given by Dr. W.R. McChesney, president of the Cedarville College, near Columbus. His talk was “Living for Power.” His three sub-topics were “get vision, determination, and success.”

After the address was given Principal Donohoe presented the 36 graduates, 18 boys, and 18 girls, with diplomas.

The stage was decorated in the class colors, blue and gold. Blue and gold ribbons were suspended from the ceiling and fastened on the ends and the side of the stage.

The invocation was offered by Rev. Glenroie McQueen, pastor of the Presbyterian Church and the benediction was given by Rev. T.I. Hanson, pastor of the M.E. Church.
