Alan Wilder Crutcher,
internationally renowned hair stylist and co-owner of the Alan Wilder Salon
in Georgetown, died at home, Tuesday, June 10, 1997 following a brief and
courageous battle with lung cancer. He was 43.
Alan was born in York, England, on December 21,
1953, but spent most of his early life in Leeds. Early in life, Alan
exhibited tremendous musical and artistic talent, and was ultimately selected
for the National Youth Theatre. Alan then attended hair dressing
college in England, receiving his Advanced City & Guilds Certificate
in Hairdressing, and was recruited by Vidal Sassoon. In the years
following, Alan worked in Sassoon salons in London, Leeds, and Liverpool;
opened and managed his own highly successful salon in Leeds; and then joined
the Queen Elizabeth II cruise ship as a stylist for Steiner's.
Alan then moved to Bermuda, where he met his life
partner, Don Wilder Plett. The two moved to Washington, DC where
they worked together for the next 15 years to build a successful hair dressing
dynasty. Alan's artistic expertise was recently recognized by Aveda,
when he achieved the status of National Educator in advanced hair cutting
and design. Alan was a talented artist, enjoying drawing,
painting, and photography. He also enjoyed traveling, and entertaining
his many friends. He and Wilder frequently hosted fabulous parties,
and their home served as gathering place at holidays and other special
events. In addition to his partner, Wilder, Alan is survived
by his mother and father, Audrey and Edward Crutcher and his brother, John,
of Leeds, England. Alan will be sadly missed by work, colleagues
and friends. |
