Douglas
Joseph Wolfer, a resident of D.C., died from a
cardiac arrest Sunday, April 9, at Lynn House, a
Christian Science nursing home in Alexandria,
VA. He was 31.
Wolfer, who tested positive for the HIV antibody
four years ago, entered Lynn House the Saturday
before his death after a brief, undiagnosed
illness.
Wolfer graduated Summa Cum Laude from Josephinum
Pontifical College in Columbus, Ohio, earning a
bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies. He
also attended the Theological College of
Catholic University.
Wolfer taught English as a second language at
The Lado International Institute of Washington,
DC and previously taught Spanish at Bishop
O’Connell High School in Arlington, VA.
Wolfer was a member of the First Church of
Christ Scientist of Washington, DC, which
friends said gave him peace and comfort. His
lover of five years, Thomas Flournoy said Wolfer
enjoyed bicycling and outdoor activities.
Wolfer is survived by Flournoy; his parents,
Margaret and Robert Wolfer; two brothers, Pat
and Jeff Wolfer; and two sisters, Cindy Hume and
Amy Wolfer, all of Indianapolis, IN; a brother,
Greg Wolfer of Ouzinkie, AK; a sister, Bonnie
McVey of Austin, TX; a sister, Anita Dennis of
Independence, KY; and many friends.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday,
April 29, at 1 p.m., at Mount Vernon Place
United Methodist Church, Shure Chapel, 900
Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.
